What is the college life without a great sports team? The University of Wyoming Cowboys football and basketball teams always draw a great crowd and inspire a lot of pride in the school. Athletics are a great way to inspire students to reach for higher goals and never settle for second best. The head coaches of both the football and basketball teams try hard to lead by example.
The Wyoming Cowboys football coach, Dave Christensen, has been with the Cowboys since 2009. During his first year of coaching, he led the team to a bowl game against Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl, which they won in double overtime. Probably even sweeter, he guided the Cowboys to victory over Colorado State, a long-time archrival of the University of Wyoming.
Heath Schroyer, the head coach for the Wyoming Cowboys basketball team, has been ranked number three among all NCAA Division I coaches because of the improvements the basketball team has made in their academic achievements over the last three seasons. This is proof that the athletics departments put great emphasis on the learning aspect of college, and always count the sports second.
The regular season games are always fun, but the student athletes care about more than just winning games. In fact, the basketball team sponsored a “Cowboys Connect with Autism” game, with fans wearing white to create awareness for autism. Any shirts sold on that day helped Autism Speaks. The Wyoming Cowboys football team sponsors a football camp for children, giving kids the opportunity to learn about the sport, visit a college campus and get exciting about possibly attending, and to meet the Cowboy players. With so many different outreach programs, the Cowboys are changing lives, and not just because they’re scoring goals on gameday.
