The people of Laramie, Wyoming find it very important that their citizens have a say in the government. For this reason, the town is run by a City Council that takes its cues from the residents. There are nine council members that serve four-year terms, though the terms overlap, so elections bring in new members quite often. Two of those seats are at-large positions, and the other seven are elected from seven different wards. The council selects the mayor and vice-mayor positions every two years at the first council meeting in January.
There is also a City Manager who serves as a sort of Chief Executive Officer. This City Manager oversees all of the city’s operations, as well as implementing new policies and legislative actions that the City Council takes, making recommendations to the City Council, and preparing the city budget. You can contact the City Manager by visiting the City Manager’s office at 406 Ivinson Avenue or calling 307-721-5226.
The City Council oversees all of the departments that keep life running smoothly in Laramie. The City Manager oversees the progress with each department, with the help of the Assistant City Manager. The Public Works department takes care of your water and trash, as well as the maintenance for the streets. The Community Development Department covers planning and zoning, as well as building codes. The Parks and Recreation Department keeps the parks and cemeteries clean and safe for public use, but they also maintain the ice arena, plan public recreation programs, and help keep the mosquitoes under control. Of course, the Police Department, Emergency Services, and the Fire Department are all a part of the government, too. There are hundreds of people working hard every day to keep the Laramie government working for the benefit of citizens and visitors.
