Laramie, Wyoming is a lot of fun and offers enough to keep the whole family occupied for weeks. Sometimes, though, you might want to see more of the amazing Wyoming scenery and visit a few more historic Old West towns. There are dozens of places to visit that are within a short drive from Laramie, and you can expand your vacation experience.
One popular day trip from Laramie is a visit to the Medicine Bow National Forest. The forest is perfect for hiking, and if you decide to spend the night, you can camp out under the wide-open Wyoming sky. The lakes there provide ample opportunities for water sports, or you can just wander around and see the beautiful scenery and take photos of the wildlife.
Cheyenne should not be missed, either. It’s just a short drive away, and the state’s capital offers plenty of historic sites and attractions that can keep you busy all day. You can take a bus tour of the city or drive it yourself, if you wish. For something just a little different, you should definitely plan to see the Cowgirls of the West Museum. After all, we all know about the outlaws and lawmen, but what about the women that helped shape the west?
If you have time, you should also visit Rawlins. This town started because of the Union Pacific railroad, just like many of the cities in Wyoming. There was an infamous outlaw named “Big Nose” George Parrot who kept the town shaking in fear. You can see exhibits at the Wyoming State Museum dedicated to Parrot and the doctor that did strange experiments with Parrot’s body after he was lynched. It might be a morbid way to spend the day, but you can’t deny that it’s interesting!
